What is Theology?

Dear Friends,

Over the centuries, there have been many attempts to define what “theology” actually is. One definition that has endured comes from Anselm of Canterbury, who described the discipline as “faith seeking understanding.” In more contemporary times, our former Archbishop Rowan Williams has described theology as “the work of asking what Christians are really saying about God and what follows from saying it.”

If such great minds have wrestled even to describe what theology is, it is no wonder that many of us shrink from the task of entering into it. Nevertheless, we here at Bethesda-by-the-Sea are not known for shrinking back.

This summer, we dove in with our Theology Uncorked series, which concluded this week. It was hardly an intimidating experience. We gathered over food and drink for friendly conversation before diving into a stimulating discussion about the meaning and purpose of prayer. We explored some of the more vexing questions surrounding prayer, but we also heard beautiful stories from those whose lives have been shaped by the practice of prayer.

It was tremendously encouraging to see a couple dozen parishioners gathered on a Wednesday evening, full of faith and seeking understanding together. While we may never be able to pin down every mystery of God, there are vital moments of clarity, encouragement, and joyful discovery when we seek a greater understanding of the rich treasury of faith we have received.

This fall, we will have a number of new opportunities, from Alpha and Bible studies to new 101 courses, where together we can seek both a greater understanding and a deeper practice of our faith. I hope this summer’s offering has encouraged you to take another step in your own journey of faith.
