Lenten Spiritual Weekend
with Herbert O’Driscoll
February 8 – 10, 2008
Changing Church: Timeless Faith: Pilgrim People
Speaking of Christian faith as a journey has become so much a part of our lives that we take it for granted. Yet the Christian journey is never a kind of aimless wandering. As with any journey it is taken through a changing scene; but it is
always taken with a destination in mind and a companion by one’s side. During our Lenten Spiritual Weekend, we will spend our time together reflecting on what it may mean to seek to live a viable and grace-giving Christian spirituality today.
Come walk this Lenten path with us. The Rev. Herbert O’Driscoll is a renowned scholar on Celtic Christianity, the Bible and preaching. He has written many books on the spiritual life, preaching, and biblical interpretation. He has traveled widely in North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, and the Holy Land, and is sought after as a speaker, teacher, preacher and broadcaster.

The End of Memory: Remembering Rightly in a Violent World; Leader: Fr. Van Culin; 6 Mondays: Beginning February 10, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., Library. What is the nature and purpose of memory, especially memories of wrongs suffered? How do we "remember rightly" and how long should we remember? Is there a point at which we ought to let go of the past, to allow memories of wrongdoings to "slip into oblivion"? Using the unsettling memories of his prolonged interrogation by military police in the communist Yugoslavia of the 1980’s, Volf present a new understanding of the function and significance of memory, remembrance as reconciliation, whose ultimate purpose is to draw us into out of hatred in order that we may forgive and be reconciled to our neighbor and enemy. Please read the Chapters 1 and 2 in preparation for the first session. For more information, please contact Father Van Culin at vanculin@bbts.org

Soup CAN Drive for St. George’s food pantry. You’ll see the big CAMPBELL’S SOUP CAN in the Narthex. Our goal is $3,000, to help St. George’s Center feed the homeless. Bethesda volunteers are already active in making sandwiches every Friday, as well as cooking
and serving at St. George’s the first and third Wednesday of every month. But we need your help to reach Bethesda’s goal. Please reach in your pocket as you enter or leave the church each week and place your donation through the slot at the top of the Campbell’s Soup Can.
Together we CAN reach our goal.
Sweater Collection for Our Little Roses Orphanage in Honduras. Yes, it does get cold in Honduras. Our mission group’s January trip coincided with a cold spell, and many of the 85 girls who live at Our Little Roses needed sweaters or other outerwear to keep warm. Once again, your help is needed! New or gently used sweaters for girls ages 1 – 18 can be dropped off throughout Lent in the collection bin located in the Narthex. When future cold snaps hit, your support of this worthy mission project will be greatly appreciated by all the girls at Our Little Roses.

From the Planned Giving Committee: "The Minister of the Congregation is directed to instruct the people, from time to time, about the duty of Christian parents to make prudent provision for the well-being of their families, and of all persons to make wills, while they are in good health, arranging for the disposal of their temporal goods, not neglecting, if they are able, to leave bequests for religious and charitable uses." (BCP, p. 445) Have you remembered Bethesda-by-the-Sea in your will?
