  • Greetings,

Welcome to the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, a community of people from all walks of life discovering the joy of knowing and following Jesus Christ. We gather on Sundays to hear the sacred stories of God’s love and to be spiritually nourished in sharing Holy Communion. Then, inspired by our fellowship, we strive to make God's love a living reality in our lives every day. At Bethesda, Sunday is the high point of the week. So, look around our web site. Then come and join us on a Sunday morning soon.

Peace, The Rev. James Harlan, Rector

  • Every Sunday is where the life begins at Bethesda. We celebrate the Holy Eucharist with glorious liturgy and music. We also celebrate Holy Eucharist during the week and offer a healing service on Wednesdays. All baptized Christians are invited to participate in the Holy Eucharist when visiting Bethesda-by-the-Sea. It is not necessary to be a member of the Episcopal Church in order to receive Holy Communion. Persons who have not been baptized are welcome to come to the altar rail and kneel to receive a blessing. Cross your arms on your chest as a sign that you will not receive Communion. • Having the faith of a child

Children and youth bring such wonderful life and energy to our community. Bethesda offers a warm welcome to every child, whether parents prefer to bring their children into the worship service, or put them in the special children's worship (when available), or let them enjoy the nursery. We strive to create a place where even our littlest members know that God loves them, where all of us can grow in our faith, and where parents can find their own sense of peace and support.

  • God is Love

Our worship is formal, intimate, transcendent, reflective, fun, and inspiring. As we celebrate our life together, we focus on God's love for each and every person and encourage one another to seek that loving presence of God. We have communion as an integral part of every service where we share together in a simple meal of bread and wine. While our worship may not be entirely familiar, we encourage everyone to join in as they are comfortable. Read more here.

“When your children ask you in time to come, 'What is the meaning of the decrees and the statutes and the ordinances that the Lord our God has commanded you?' then you shall say to your children, 'We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. The Lord displayed before our eyes great and awesome signs and wonders against Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his household. He brought us out from there in order to bring us in, to give us the land that he promised on oath to our ancestors. Then the Lord commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our lasting good, so as to keep us alive, as is now the case. If we diligently observe this entire commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, we will be in the right'.” –Deuteronomy 6:20–25

Why are we here? That is a question that you have probably been asked and probably asked yourself at some point in your spiritual journey. It is a question even our youngest members have at Bethesda-by-the-Sea. The answer to that question is going to vary based on what draws us all to the divine and what draws the divine to us. But, at the core of our common Christian experience is an essential truth. We are here because we are taking part in a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. All of those children that asked the meaning of our decrees and statutes, all of those youth that inquired about the ordinances the Lord God commanded of us, that is who we are and who we have always been. It is our God given responsibility to pass on what we have learned to the next generation and to walk with them as they learn, grow, and explore along their own spiritual path.

Nursery on Sundays

We welcome children from the youngest ages to enjoy church with their families. For those who prefer, we do offer a child care ministry at all of our Sunday services for children up to three years of age. You are welcome to carry your child to our nursery at any point during the service - just ask an usher to point the way.

The Nursery is located on the second floor of the Sunday School Hall. The child's safety and parent's peace of mind are our primary concerns. Please sign your child in when you arrive and be sure to sign him/her out when you leave. Pagers are provided should a parent be needed quickly.

Children’s Ministries

Children’s Worship (Ages 3-7) | 9:00 a.m. | Sunday School Hall
For young children we offer a special worship experience during the 9:00 a.m. service on Sundays. There we sing songs, focus on children’s stories that reinforce the lectionary readings for the week, and pray for our family and friends before rejoining parents in the church in time for communion.

Children’s Sunday School (Pre-K-5th Grade)
Here at Bethesda-by-the-Sea we recognize that children grow into their faith and our education programs highlight the various stages of religious development that our kids move through on their spiritual journeys. Each step in the Children’s Sunday School process builds towards a deeper understanding of the biblical foundations of our faith. First, the children learn the biblical stories, then they learn how to interpret the stories, then they learn how the stories fit together.

Pre-K Sunday School Class

Sundays | 10:00 a.m. | Sunday School Hall
Our Pre-K Class is open to all children ages 3 and 4. The class meets in their own room in the Sunday School Hall. The purpose of this class is to introduce our youngest members to the major stories from the bible. Each week they will sing songs, hear a story, and engage in the lesson by making crafts or playing games.

Kindergarten & 1st Grade Sunday School Class

Sundays | 10:00 a.m. | Sunday School Hall
If your child is currently in Kindergarten or 1st Grade their class meets in their own room in the Sunday School Hall. The purpose of this class is to teach young people tools for interpreting well known biblical stories. Each week the class will watch an insightful video, hear a story from the Old or New Testament, and participate in fun activities.

2nd & 3rd Grade Sunday School Class

Sundays | 10:00 a.m. | Sunday School Hall
Our 2nd & 3rd Grade Class will be learning more about how we order our stories in the church using the weekly lectionary and liturgical calendar. The class meets in the Sunday School Hall and each session includes a cool video, a bible exploration, and an active lesson.

4th & 5th Grade Sunday School Class

Sundays | 10:00 a.m. | Sunday School Hall
We offer a class for 4th and 5th graders that focuses on learning more about the bible. Each week participants will become bible detectives as they dig into all of the important stories of the Old Testament. Each member of the class will also receive their very own study bible just for coming.

Special Events for Children

In addition to our weekly Sunday offerings for our children, Bethesda-by-the-Sea also presents special children-centered events throughout the year including our Christmas Pageant, family breakfast Sundays, Spring Carnival, outreach opportunities with the SOS Port Ministry Project, and more.
