  • Greetings,

Welcome to the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, a community of people from all walks of life discovering the joy of knowing and following Jesus Christ. We gather on Sundays to hear the sacred stories of God’s love and to be spiritually nourished in sharing Holy Communion. Then, inspired by our fellowship, we strive to make God's love a living reality in our lives every day. At Bethesda, Sunday is the high point of the week. So, look around our web site. Then come and join us on a Sunday morning soon.

Peace, The Rev. James Harlan, Rector

  • Every Sunday is where the life begins at Bethesda. We celebrate the Holy Eucharist with glorious liturgy and music. We also celebrate Holy Eucharist during the week and offer a healing service on Wednesdays. All baptized Christians are invited to participate in the Holy Eucharist when visiting Bethesda-by-the-Sea. It is not necessary to be a member of the Episcopal Church in order to receive Holy Communion. Persons who have not been baptized are welcome to come to the altar rail and kneel to receive a blessing. Cross your arms on your chest as a sign that you will not receive Communion. • Having the faith of a child

Children and youth bring such wonderful life and energy to our community. Bethesda offers a warm welcome to every child, whether parents prefer to bring their children into the worship service, or put them in the special children's worship (when available), or let them enjoy the nursery. We strive to create a place where even our littlest members know that God loves them, where all of us can grow in our faith, and where parents can find their own sense of peace and support.

  • God is Love

Our worship is formal, intimate, transcendent, reflective, fun, and inspiring. As we celebrate our life together, we focus on God's love for each and every person and encourage one another to seek that loving presence of God. We have communion as an integral part of every service where we share together in a simple meal of bread and wine. While our worship may not be entirely familiar, we encourage everyone to join in as they are comfortable. Read more here.

Employment Opportunities

Associate for Outreach and Development

The Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, Florida announces its search for an Associate for Outreach and Development. The Associate leads all of Bethesda’s outreach ministries and stewardship and fundraising efforts. This position offers great potential to have a lasting impact on the parish and to work creatively with congregational leaders who are eager to learn and grow in both these areas of ministry. The right candidate may be either a lay person or a priest, depending on qualifications, skills, and experience.

The Associate for Outreach and Development works directly under the supervision and leadership of the Rector. Bethesda’s outreach ministries are evolving from primarily a grants-based program to more hands-on service to people in need. These hands-on initiatives include mentoring at-risk high school students, a significant hunger initiative called Feeding in February, mission trips, as well as regular work at the nearby St. George’s Center and at Holy Redeemer church. Outreach funds primarily come from the proceeds of Bethesda’s retail operations and average around $450,000 per year. The Associate leads a passionate Outreach Committee learning together how to involve a significant number of parishioners in hands-on service and to continue to build supportive relationships with service agencies in the county.

The Associate for Outreach and Development also works closely with Associate for Administration and directs a significant portion of the work of the Outreach and Development Coordinator. Bethesda is searching for an experienced professional to help not only with fundraising but also with formation as a community of joyful, generous stewards. A growing group of volunteers who are passionate about stewardship are ready to learn and to work under the new Associate’s leadership to execute effective, ongoing stewardship education, an annual campaign, planned giving, and capital/major gifts.

Bethesda-by-the-Sea is the largest parish in the Diocese of Southeast Florida, with an average Sunday attendance of 465 and an annual operating budget of $3 million. The staff consists of a (lay) Associate for Music and Liturgy, a (lay) Associate for Administration, an (ordained) Associate for Christian Education and Pastoral Care, a Director of Children and Youth Ministries, several non-stipendiary clergy, and twelve additional full-time staff. A beautiful, English-gothic church and large building complex provide a venue for rich worship, superb music, and excellent ministry. Strong parish leadership through the Vestry and active committees shapes direction, priorities, and policies. Myriad ministries draw parishioners into worship, education, and service to the wider community and the world.

Bethesda-by-the-Sea is in a phase of renewed focus on strategic growth in mission and ministry following the calling of a new Rector in 2011. The Associate for Outreach and Development will be integral in growing a culture of stewardship and service and providing the resources needed for mission and ministry.

Bethesda is located a block from one of the most beautiful beaches on the east coast in the Town of Palm Beach—a barrier island. Across the bridge, West Palm Beach and the rest of Palm Beach County offer all the big city amenities.
