  • Greetings,

Welcome to the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, a community of people from all walks of life discovering the joy of knowing and following Jesus Christ. We gather on Sundays to hear the sacred stories of God’s love and to be spiritually nourished in sharing Holy Communion. Then, inspired by our fellowship, we strive to make God's love a living reality in our lives every day. At Bethesda, Sunday is the high point of the week. So, look around our web site. Then come and join us on a Sunday morning soon.

Peace, The Rev. James Harlan, Rector

  • Every Sunday is where the life begins at Bethesda. We celebrate the Holy Eucharist with glorious liturgy and music. We also celebrate Holy Eucharist during the week and offer a healing service on Wednesdays. All baptized Christians are invited to participate in the Holy Eucharist when visiting Bethesda-by-the-Sea. It is not necessary to be a member of the Episcopal Church in order to receive Holy Communion. Persons who have not been baptized are welcome to come to the altar rail and kneel to receive a blessing. Cross your arms on your chest as a sign that you will not receive Communion. Click here for our service schedule.

  • Having the faith of a child

Children and youth bring such wonderful life and energy to our community. Bethesda offers a warm welcome to every child, whether parents prefer to bring their children into the worship service, or put them in the special children's worship (when available), or let them enjoy the nursery. We strive to create a place where even our littlest members know that God loves them, where all of us can grow in our faith, and where parents can find their own sense of peace and support.

  • God is Love

Our worship is formal, intimate, transcendent, reflective, fun, and inspiring. As we celebrate our life together, we focus on God's love for each and every person and encourage one another to seek that loving presence of God. We have communion as an integral part of every service where we share together in a simple meal of bread and wine. While our worship may not be entirely familiar, we encourage everyone to join in as they are comfortable. Read more here.

The Rev. Thomas Morris

The Rev. Thomas Morris

Associate for Outreach & Development

Approaching twenty years of ordained ministry and a decade of lay ministry Father Morris comes to Bethesda with a range of experience serving Episcopal churches and organizations. He has served as a school Chaplain in the diocese of Texas, an Assistant Chaplain at Sewanee, a parish priest in the dioceses of Atlanta and Western Northern Carolina, Executive Director at St. Mary's Sewanee: Ayres Center for Spiritual Development, and most recently a development consultant partnering with non-profits to expand their capacity to fulfill their mission.

Throughout his ministry, Father Morris has successfully created new programs and increased participation for meaningful engagement through a variety of outreach opportunities, raised annual giving significantly, and accomplished successful capital campaigns. He understands the dynamic and challenging environment of stewardship and enjoys working with volunteers to develop effective giving strategies that ensure the Church's ability to realize its mission of "restoring all people to unity with God and each other in Christ."

His passion for ministry begins in the very human stories of the scriptures and how week by week, year by year all who encounter them are inspired, challenged, and called to grow in the love and knowledge of God. Father Morris believes in the power of community, especially Christian community, to connect people, one to another, and through those connections engage the vast resources of a parish, like Bethesda, and mobilize them toward realizing their full potential toward bringing the love of God to the world.

With many years of diverse experience Father Morris is eager and ready to offer his skills and gifts as Associate for Outreach and Development, bringing together his interests in stewardship, outreach, program development, and volunteer engagement. For Father Morris, the good news of the Gospel is a simple matter, God is real, freely offers love, is with us in all of life, and shows us how to live through Christ. Following Jesus is not always so simple, but mercy and grace abound, despite our human frailty and failings.

Thomas is eager to become a part of the Bethesda family and Palm Beach community. He loves the ocean and the tropical beauty that South Florida offers. He enjoys travel, good food, and live music. Accompanying him to Palm Beach is his canine companion Watson. In addition to work and family Father Morris is a decent tennis player and enjoys USTA league play, listening to all kinds of music, reading three books at a time, and streaming the latest season of House of Cards or Ray Donovan.
